Born in 1947, Kim Neo grew up in Katong, learning beside her mother—a true-blue Nonya who cooked for her husband every day.
In their pre-war Peranakan home in Joo Chiat, friends gathered for games and her mother's generous cooking. Her hospitality was well known; her kitchen rules were just as memorable: no changing the recipes, and every dish had to meet her exacting standards.
